About:

Advance Australia Fair was written in the 1870s, but did not gain its status as the official Australian national anthem until 1984, in part due to the popularity of both God Save the Queen and Waltzing Matilda. There were attempts in both 1951 and 1973 to write a brand new national anthem, but these efforts did not result in the adoption of any definitive new anthem.

Advance Australia Fair only became the anthem after a vote between it and three other contenders: God Save the Queen, Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia.

Lyrics:

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
