Land der Berge, Land am Strome
It was long assumed that the music of Land der Berge, Land am Strome, the Austrian national anthem, was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the weeks before his early death. However, his authorship is now regarded as unlikely, with the music probably written by Johann Holzer.
The music was adopted as national anthem in the aftermath of World War II. The lyrics were written by Croatian-Austrian writer Paula von Preradović in 1946, making her one of the few women to have written lyrics for a national anthem. In early 2012, the lyrics of the anthem were altered to make them gender-neutral.
Land der Berge, Land am Strome,
Land der Äcker, Land der Dome,
Land der Hämmer, zukunftsreich!
Heimat großer Töchter und Söhne,
Volk, begnadet für das Schöne,
Heiß umfehdet, wild umstritten,
Liegst dem Erdteil du inmitten
Einem starken Herzen gleich.
Hast seit frühen Ahnentagen
Hoher Sendung Last getragen,
Mutig in die neuen Zeiten,
Frei und gläubig sieh uns schreiten,
Arbeitsfroh und hoffnungsreich.
Einig laß in Jubelchören,
Vaterland, dir Treue schwören.
Land of mountains, land by the stream,
Land of fields, land of cathedrals,
Land of hammers, with a promising future,
Home to great daughters and sons,
A nation highly blessed with beauty,
Strongly feuded for, fiercely hard-fought for,
You lie in the middle of the continent
Like a strong heart,
Since the early days of the ancestors you have
Borne the burden of a high mission,
Much tried Austria,
Much tried Austria.
Bravely towards the new ages
See us striding, free, and faithful,
Assiduous and full of hope,
Unified, in jubilation choirs, let us
Pledge allegiance to you, Fatherland
Much beloved Austria,
Much beloved Austria.
