About:

The Deutschlandlied (Song of the Germans) has been used, in various forms, as the national anthem of Germany since 1922. The music was written separately from the lyrics, in 1797, by Joseph Haydn.

Haydn's composition, in honour of the birthday of Austrian Emperor Francis II, was adapted in 1841 by the German poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Von Fallersleben wrote a set of revolutionary, republican lyrics to Haydn's music, and the song became one of the symbols of the March Revolution of 1848.

The song was first adopted as the German national anthem in 1922, during the Weimar Republic.

Lyrics:

German:

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
Brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Sind des Glückes Unterpfand;
Blüh’ im Glanze dieses Glückes,
Blühe, deutsches Vaterland!

English:

Unity and justice and freedom
For the German fatherland!
For these let us all strive
Brotherly with heart and hand!
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the pledge of fortune;
Flourish in this fortune’s blessing,
Flourish, German fatherland!
