About:

Mazurek Dąbrowskiego (Dąbrowski's Mazurka) is also often referred to by its first words, Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła (Poland Has Not Yet Perished) or by its original title, Pieśń Legionów Polskich we Włoszech(Song of the Polish Legions in Italy).

The anthem, a mazurka, was written by Józef Wybicki in northern Italy in July 1797, to boost the morale of Polish soldiers serving in Italy as part of Napoléon's army. It soon became one of the most popular patriotic songs in Poland.

When Poland re-emerged as an independent state in 1918, Mazurek Dąbrowskiego became its de facto anthem, and was officially adopted in 1926. The anthem strongly influenced the writing of Hey Slavs, the former national anthem of Yugoslavia, and is also notable for influencing the lyrics of the Ukrainian anthem, Shche ne vmerla Ukraina (Ukraine's glory has not yet perished).

Lyrics:

Polish:

Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła,
Kiedy my żyjemy.
Co nam obca przemoc wzięła,
Szablą odbierzemy.

Marsz, marsz, Dąbrowski,
Z ziemi włoskiej do Polski.
Za twoim przewodem
Złączym się z narodem.

Przejdziem Wisłę, przejdziem Wartę,
Będziem Polakami.
Dał nam przykład Bonaparte,
Jak zwyciężać mamy.

Marsz, marsz…

Jak Czarniecki do Poznania
Po szwedzkim zaborze,
Dla ojczyzny ratowania
Wrócim się przez morze.

Marsz, marsz…

Już tam ojciec do swej Basi
Mówi zapłakany
Słuchaj jeno, pono nasi
Biją w tarabany.

Marsz, marsz…

English:

Poland has not perished yet
So long as we still live
What foreign force has taken from us
We shall take back with the sword.

March, march, Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland
Under thy command
Let us now rejoin the nation

Cross the Vistula and Warta
And Poles we shall be
We’ve been shown by Bonaparte
Ways to victory

March, march…

Like Czarniecki to Poznań
After Swedish occupation,
To rescue our homeland
We shall return by sea

March, march…

Father, in tears
Says to his Basia
Just listen, it seems that our people
Are beating the drums

March, march…
