About:

South Sudan

The newest national anthem in the world, South Sudan Oyee! was written by a group of music students from Juba University who won a public competition held by the SPLM in late 2010.

The independence of South Sudan is one of the outcomes of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement intended to end Sudan's decades-long civil war. Earlier versions of the anthem's lyrics had referred to South Sudan by the archaic name of 'Kush', a reference to the ancient Nubian kingdom which existed in present-day South Sudan from the 10th century BCE.

Lyrics:

Oh God!

We praise and glorify you
For your grace on South Sudan
The land of great abundance
Uphold us united in peace and harmony

Oh motherland!
Arise! Raise your flag with the guiding star
And sing songs of freedom with joy
For peace, justice and liberty
Shall forever more reign

Oh great warriors!
Let us stand up in silence and respect
Saluting our martyrs whose blood
Cemented our national foundation
We vow to protect our nation

So Lord, bless South Sudan!
